So You Want to Start a Garden

So You Want to Start a Garden

Have you been thinking about planting a garden of your own but don't know where to start? Have you ever brought home a flower from the store and thought "I wish I could grow a bunch of these"? Have you ever bought fruit or veggies and thought "it would be so much cheaper if I grew my own fruits and veggies! I bet they taste better too!"? Have you ever thought about starting an herb garden to save money? Have you ever looked around your home and wondered where your garden would be placed? Here is some good news: gardens can be grown pretty much everywhere, even indoors. Here are some tips and tricks to help you begin your garden.

Pretty much every garden is going to require some planning in advance. If you want your seedlings to grow up to be big and strong you will need to plant them during certain times of the year and then have patience while you wait for them to grow. Yes, it is possible to grow flowers on a whim sometimes. But if you really want your garden to thrive you'll have to start your gardening work long in advance of your planting and harvesting. Other plants need to be planted many weeks in advance of their blooming. Some plants don't bloom for an entire year after they are planted. If you want your garden to be successful you need to be prepared to make a commitment to it.

If you make a decision to baby your plants, it is possible to begin sprouting them indoors in seeding pots weeks or months ahead of planting them. If you decide to plant sensitive or "high maintenance" plants, it is easier if you begin by growing them inside where the temperature can be controlled. Some plants are simple and will grow just by being a seed tossed into the dirt. Lettuce is one such plant. Other plants have particular needs to be cared and nurtured before they are able to thrive.

Don't buy all of the tools in the nursery just because you can. Start with a few basics like a garden rake, a garden spade and a good hose and then build from there. As you work out in your gardens you will start to learn which tools are important to always have on hand and which you only use once in a while. Don't let yourself get talked into buying a bunch of tools you don't need by the garden department clerk. You might wind up tossing a bunch of money away on tools that you won't ever use!

Starting a garden is a lot of fun, but also a lot of work. If you allow yourself the time to learn about gardening before you begin, there is no reason your garden won't be plentiful. Have fun with your garden! It's an excuse to play around outdoors!
